Halfway through her 32-minute set on Wednesday night at the Roseland Ballroom in Manhattan, Madonna offered a message of sympathy.
“All you people I saw sleeping in the street last night,” she said, “this song is for you.”
It was “Hung Up,” about the agony of waiting. And as she finished the song, she added, just in case the message wasn’t clear: “Anybody who knows me knows how much I hate to wait.”
New York may be a city of the impatient, but for Madonna’s fans, Wednesday’s show proved that seeing her for free in a 2,200-capacity hall — minuscule by her usual touring standards — was something worth waiting for. And waiting for a very long time.
The line outside Roseland, on West 52nd Street, formed 60 hours before show time. By late Tuesday it had stretched around the block as the faithful stood and sat and slept and caffeinated themselves for the chance to score one of the 750 wrist bands that would guarantee free admission.
Erica Gabriel, a 28-year-old makeup artist, waited through the night on line with friends. Once duly wrist-banded some time after 6 a.m., she returned home to prepare the elaborate, swooping hairstyle and “stewardess-Madonna-tricky-tranny look” that she sported early Wednesday evening — as she waited on line again to receive a second wristband.
“Gays don’t camp out,” said one of Ms. Gabriel’s friends, as the group laughed, “but we’ll camp out for this.”
Even those who joined the queue relatively late proved to be professionals of a sort.
“I’m not fanatical,” said Walter Sharpe, 36, an interior designer from Brooklyn. “But I do collect Madonna magazine covers, and I’ve got maybe 170 of them.”
Well they must not be paying her by the word: Miley Cyrus just inked a deal to write her *choke, gag* memoirs – for what’s being called a “seven-figure” deal.
15-year-old Miley will recount the portion of her life for which she has been a sentient human being for the Disney Book Group. MC says she hopes to “motivate mothers and daughters to build lifetimes of memories together.” Yawn, but if those saucy snaps are any indication, Volume Two should be a hell of a lot hotter.
Miley made $18.5 million last year.
Eli’s Honeymoon Audible Picked Off
So Eli Manning thought he’d be so clever and QB-sneak off to a “secret” location in Mexico with his bride. Didn’t work.
The New York Daily News reports that Eli and Abby MacGrew were supposed to hang out at their Cabo wedding resort for a few days – but abruptly shipped off to a place they thought they could be alone. Someone forgot to tell the paparazzi, who still got shots of them getting all unnecessary roughness … with some reading material, especially Abby’s book on Darfur.

So you thought that the big outing of a character on “Gossip Girl” was going to be, like, an art-maybe-imitating-life-type thing involving Chace Crawford?
Not so much. Kelly Rutherford, who plays Blake Lively’s mom on the show, blabbed to Us about who would be outed this season – and it’s (watch out, spoiler …) her son, Eric, played by Connor Paolo. Apparently he’s a troubled type, and it’s not the only thing he’s dealing with. But you knew that already.

Kanye West and his fiancée Alexis Phifer may have told the world that they’re history as a couple, but the Chicago Sun-Times says that it might not quite be curtains. A close friend says, “I’m not convinced they are truly, totally over.” … The L.A. Times takes Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro to task for the string of perfunctory paydays they’ve been pumping out recently – like Pacino’s “88 Minutes,” for which he got paid $9 million. … A Florida teen made his borderline senile grandma act in a gangsta rap video, holding a semiautomatic pistol, and he’s been arrested for it, reports the Palm Beach Post.

“(Reuters) – Armed robbers stole designer watches worth 700,000 pounds in simultaneous daytime raids on two upmarket department stores in Manchester on Wednesday, police said.
Two men carrying claw hammers smashed display cases at Selfridges, while a third filled a bag with watches worth 400,000 pounds.
At the same time, two men wearing motorcycle helmets attacked a security guard at the nearby Harvey Nichols store, broke cabinets with hammers and stole watches worth 300,000 pounds.
Both stores in the city’s Exchange Square shopping district were open at the time, but no customers were injured, police said.
The five men escaped in a stolen red Ford Transit van before switching to an unknown getaway car.
Detective Sergeant Dave Turner, of Greater Manchester Police, said: ‘This incident has left one man with minor injuries and a number of other people extremely distressed.”
