Call it a license to thrill.
Sexually active New Yorkers looking to wise up before turning the lights down can verify their partners’ sexual health status with a simple glance in their wallet.
Manhattan-based company STFree Certifications provides its health-conscious customers a sexual history “license” with a phone number on the back that enables them to prove their testing backgrounds to potential partners.
More than 15,000 people nationwide have signed up for the STFree service, launched in 2004 by Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, native Eli Dancy.
Dancy, a former club promoter, said he saw “a lot of irresponsibility” in his neighborhood and created the STFree card to help raise awareness.
“In places like where I grew up and where I worked, there are incredibly high HIV and STD rates,” said Dancy, 28. “This card opens up the conversation for people to talk about it.”
Nearly one-third of New Yorkers with multiple sex partners regularly have sex without condoms, government statistics show. More than 100,000 New Yorkers have HIV or AIDS.
“People in our community don’t take the time to check each other, and it puts a lot of lives at risk,” said Harlem resident Tawanna Jones, 23.
At registration, which can be completed online or inside an STFree van that travels citywide, program subscribers must provide a detailed sexual profile and be tested.
To access the testing history of an STFree cardholder, partners must have access to the phone number located on the back of the card as well as to a PIN number provided only to the STFree member.
“This card will keep people from lying and get it all out in the open,” said Bronx beautician Lorna Smith, 51, who lives in the borough with the highest AIDS death toll citywide.
“It will let you know who’s safe, and who’s not. It’s definitely a good idea,” said fireproofer Eric Lopez, 28, of Sunset Park, Brooklyn.
STFree members pay a one-time $19.99 fee for the service – which Dancy said will allow more people to join.

with a motto of “Telling America’s Story.” The page includes stories on Syria and Nuclear Reactors, Terrorists and other Bush Administration foreign policy news.
It’s not clear whether this ad is being displayed within the United States itself, or simply to the rest of the world. Tax payer money well spent, or waste of money propaganda via Adsense units? You can be the judge.

Attacks mark Baghdad anniversary

At least six people have been killed in mortar attacks in Baghdad on the fifth anniversary of the city’s capture by American forces. The attacks, in the Sadr City district of the city, came as the capital observed a vehicle curfew. Shia cleric Moqtada Sadr had called for a mass anti-American rally, but cancelled it amid security concerns. It is five years since US troops pulled down a large statue of the late Saddam Hussein in the city centre. Witnesses and officials told the BBC that one mortar exploded at a funeral wake, killing one person and wounding unknown others. A second mortar landed on a building, killing five. Baghdad’s Green Zone, which houses diplomatic missions and much of Iraq’s government, also came under mortar fire but there are no reports of injuries. Cars and motorcycles have been banned from the streets until midnight (2100 GMT), the Iraqi government said. People have been mostly staying at home, reports say. Clashes overnight in Sadr City between Iraqi and US forces and militiamen loyal to the cleric left at least 12 people dead, medical workers said. Fragile truce Moqtada Sadr had said that a one-million-strong protest was planned to mark the anniversary, but he called it off, saying he feared there could be bloodshed.
He also threatened to suspend a truce – credited with helping curb violence levels in Iraq since last year – by his powerful Mehdi Army militia. “If necessary the ceasefire will be lifted in order to implement our aims, ideology, religion, principles, nationhood,” a statement said. On Monday, Iraq’s prime minister threatened to exclude the radical Shia cleric’s movement from politics unless he disbanded the Mehdi Army. In recent weeks, Moqtada Sadr’s followers have clashed with Iraqi government troops and US forces in southern Iraq and Baghdad, as the government tried to crack down on militias. On Tuesday, the top US military leader in Iraq, Gen David Petraeus, told US Congress that any progress recently made in Iraq were “fragile and is reversible”. He recommended a suspension of US troop withdrawals after July to protect security gains made during the Iraq “surge”, which saw an increase in US forces. After the planned “drawdown” of about 20,000 troops, there should be a 45-day “period of consolidation and evaluation”, Gen Petraeus said. |
