‘Hannah Montana’ star avoids questions about controversial pics by skipping down red carpet.

In her first major public appearance since near-topless photos, which were shot for Vanity Fair, stirred considerable debate among fans, parents and celebs like Madonna and Hilary Duff, “Hannah Montana” star Miley Cyrus appeared Saturday night at the Disney Channel Games concert, held at Orlando, Florida’s Walt Disney World, and thanked her fans for their undying support.

“I hope you had an awesome time,” Cyrus was quoted as saying on People.com. The Disney moneymaker skipped her way down the event’s red carpet, seemingly to avoid questions about the photo scandal. “I saw a sign back there that said, ‘Miley, I’m praying for you.’ I could not be more appreciative. Thank you, guys, for all your support. Without you, none of this would be possible. I love every one of you, and I could not be more appreciative. God bless you.”

Cyrus’ set opened with “See You Again,” and later on, the star previewed two tracks — “Fly on the Wall” and “Breakout” — from her forthcoming, yet-untitled album, which hits stores July 22.

Other performers that took the stage Saturday included the Jonas Brothers, the Cheetah Girls and Jordan Pruitt.

But the fans weren’t the only ones backing Cyrus up. In an interview with the Orlando Sentinel, Cyrus’ “Hannah Montana” co-star Jason Earles said she’s taking last week’s controversy in stride. “She’s one of the strongest people I’ve ever met,” he told the paper. “She’ll do everything to make sure she does right by her fans. It will be all right. I know what kind of person she is. She has a great heart.”

Investors, take heart: Warren Buffett sees investment opportunities in the U.S. stock and bond markets, and believes widespread financial turmoil from the credit crunch is behind us.

All eyes were on Warren Buffett at Berkshire Hathaway’s annual meeting at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb.

Speaking to reporters Sunday, a day after Berkshire Hathaway Inc.’s annual fan-fest for shareholders at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb., both Mr. Buffett, 77 years old, and Vice Chairman Charlie Munger, 84, criticized regulators, politicians and accountants for lax oversight of financial institutions that are at the center of the subprime-mortgage crisis, and, according to Mr. Munger, were guilty of “deep conflicts of interest.”

“The regulators and the accountants have failed us terribly,” Mr. Munger said, adding that mark-to-market accounting rules are necessary but can obscure other problems within a company.

This year at Mr. Buffett’s annual gathering for shareholders — often called “Woodstock for Capitalists” — 31,000 Buffett enthusiasts were serenaded by Fruit of the Loom minstrels, enjoyed samples of Berkshire portfolio companies such as Dilly Bars and watched artist Michael Israel speed-paint a Buffett portrait with Benjamin Moore paints.

Mr. Buffett credited the Federal Reserve for helping to avert a more-widespread crisis on Wall Street by orchestrating a bailout of Bear Stearns Cos. that “prevented, in my opinion, the contagion where you’re going to have runs on investment banks.”

Bank losses “aren’t over by a long shot, but a lot of it has already been recognized,” he said, adding that the depth of the housing crisis, unemployment and other economic factors would help determine how long the write-downs continue.

“The idea of financial panic — that has been pretty much taken care of,” he said.

Halfway through her 32-minute set on Wednesday night at the Roseland Ballroom in Manhattan, Madonna offered a message of sympathy.

“All you people I saw sleeping in the street last night,” she said, “this song is for you.”

It was “Hung Up,” about the agony of waiting. And as she finished the song, she added, just in case the message wasn’t clear: “Anybody who knows me knows how much I hate to wait.”

New York may be a city of the impatient, but for Madonna’s fans, Wednesday’s show proved that seeing her for free in a 2,200-capacity hall — minuscule by her usual touring standards — was something worth waiting for. And waiting for a very long time.

The line outside Roseland, on West 52nd Street, formed 60 hours before show time. By late Tuesday it had stretched around the block as the faithful stood and sat and slept and caffeinated themselves for the chance to score one of the 750 wrist bands that would guarantee free admission.

Erica Gabriel, a 28-year-old makeup artist, waited through the night on line with friends. Once duly wrist-banded some time after 6 a.m., she returned home to prepare the elaborate, swooping hairstyle and “stewardess-Madonna-tricky-tranny look” that she sported early Wednesday evening — as she waited on line again to receive a second wristband.

“Gays don’t camp out,” said one of Ms. Gabriel’s friends, as the group laughed, “but we’ll camp out for this.”

Even those who joined the queue relatively late proved to be professionals of a sort.

“I’m not fanatical,” said Walter Sharpe, 36, an interior designer from Brooklyn. “But I do collect Madonna magazine covers, and I’ve got maybe 170 of them.”

George Clooney
Clooney, who plays a US sports star also directed the movie

Screen idol George Clooney was greeted by hundreds of screaming fans at the UK premiere of his new film Leatherheads.

The 46-year-old accompanied co-star Renee Zellweger to the Leicester Square screening of the romantic comedy.

Clooney plays an American footballer who gets caught up in a love triangle with a reporter in the 1920s-set film.

But he said that in real life, his sporting ambitions were frustrated: “I did have two try-outs with the Cincinnati Reds. I only lacked talent.”

At one point, wannabe Nancys from the BBC One show I’d Do Anything joined crowds outside the Odeon Leicester Square.

Asked at a press conference before the premiere about his appeal to women, Clooney joked: “What’s not to love? How much time do we have? I think it’s really hair.”

Co-star Zellweger, 38, added: “It looks almost natural.”

Earlier in the day, Clooney visited Downing Street to discuss the Darfur crisis with Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Leatherheads, which opened to mixed reviews, has recorded disappointing takings in the US.

It came third at last weekend’s North American box office, behind gambling film 21 and fantasy Nim’s Island.

“I wish I could have that crystal ball and tell you what went wrong,” Nikki Rocco, head of distribution for Universal, said earlier this week.
