Goodbye HD DVD Combo

“Mummy” movies to be the first to from Universal to hit Blu

Since Toshiba waved the white flag signalling the surrender of HD DVD in February, movie studios are turning their attentions to Blu-ray Disc for the release of high-definition content.

Universal Studios was the strongest content supporter of HD DVD throughout the format’s life, but quickly told the world that it would retool to begin releasing on Blu-ray Disc. Last week, Universal Studios said that it would release about 40 Blu-ray Disc titles this year.

The first Universal title to hit Blu-ray Disc that wasn’t originally on HD DVD will be Doomsday, which stars Rhona Mitra and Sean Pertwee, and is considered a box office slump with just under $11 million take-in according to Rotten Tomatoes.

Other new pictures to hit high-def only on Blu-ray Disc are The Incredible Hulk, Wanted, Hellboy II, Mamma Mia and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

July 22 will mark the first Universal high-def movies to ship in blue boxes, with the release of the first two Mummy movies and the spinoff Scorpion King film.

The agency’s National Cyber Range for cyberwar simulation would be similar to Star Trek‘s holodeck or a Snow Crash-style Metaverse.

Police officers practice their firearm skills on a shooting range, so why shouldn’t government computer security experts have the same kind of training ground?

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or Darpa, on Monday issued a call for research proposals to develop the National Cyber Range, or NCR (NYSE: NCR), a virtual network environment for cyberwar simulation.

In other words, Darpa wants to build something along the lines of The Matrix, Star Trek‘s holodeck, or a Snow Crash-style Metaverse to test cyberwar strategies and drill cyberwarriors. That’s not to say Darpa is aiming for a visually immersive world to entertain people; rather, it wants a place to pit hackers against simulated machines.

Darpa’s interest in such matters reflects a growing U.S. government and military commitment to develop more sophisticated cyberwar capabilities. A major reason for this is that other countries, such as China, are pursuing similar goals.

“The NCR will become a National resource for testing unclassified and classified cyber programs,” Darpa’s announcement explains. “Government and Government-sponsored Test Organizations (TO) authorized to conduct cyber testing will coordinate with the NCR performer for range time and resources. …The NCR will support multiple, simultaneous, segmented tests and testbeds. At the completion of the test the NCR will sanitize and de-allocate the testbed resources, thus absorbing them back into the range.”

The NCR aims to provide the ability to replicate military, government, and commercial IT systems and infrastructure; to monitor and manage events; and to analyze, collect, and present test data.

George Michael has a lot of “Faith” in his North American fans. The British pop singer on Monday unveiled plans for his first tour of the United States and Canada in 17 years, beginning June 17 at San Diego Sports Arena.
The 22-date arena trek runs through August 3 at the BankAtlantic Center in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Tickets for the “25 Live” tour go on sale to the general public on April 6th, a week after fan club members get first dibs. Ticketmaster currently lists one show, the July 7 gig at Saint Paul, MN., where the top price is $175.
While his international appeal remains strong, Michael’s profile in the United States has waned over the past decade, although his last album, 2004’s “Patience,” managed to peak at No. 12 thanks to an appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”
Michael, 44, rose to fame in the early 1980s as one-half of the singing duo Wham! and enhanced his popularity with his solo debut, 1987’s “Faith,” which has been certified for U.S. shipments in excess of 10 million copies. It included the hit singles “Father Figure,” “I Want Your Sex Parts 1 & 2” and the title track.
Subsequent efforts did not sell nearly as well, and Michael’s career ground to a halt in the early 1990s when he unsuccessfully sued Sony to get out of his contract. In 1998, he was arrested for lewd conduct in Beverly Hills, and subsequently disclosed his homosexuality.
The European leg of his “25 Live” tour took him to 12 countries where he performed 80 shows for some 1.3 million fans, according to a statement.
The North American tour will promote a double-disc hits set, the second of his career. “Twenty-Five” is scheduled for U.S. release on April 1, a decade after Michael issued the retrospective “Ladies & Gentlemen: The Best of George Michael.”

WASHINGTON/SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Google Inc on Monday unveiled plans for a new generation of wireless devices to operate on soon-to-be-vacant television airwaves, and sought to alleviate fears that this might interfere with TV broadcasts or wireless microphones. Full Article
