Gary McKinnon, a British computer expert, claims he’s just fascinated with UFOs. Using his home computer and a modem — how WarGames! — he infiltrated military networks and accessed thousands of computers trying to find evidence of alien contact. Now caught and having lost an appeal with the British courts, he’s awaiting extradition to the United States to stand trial, accused of the “biggest military hack of all time.” The full list of his computer-exploiting prowess:

Using his own computer at home in London, McKinnon hacked into 97 computers belonging to and used by the U.S. government between February 2001 and March 2002.

McKinnon is accused of causing the entire U.S. Army’s Military District of Washington network of more than 2,000 computers to be shut down for 24 hours.

Using a limited 56-kbps dialup modem and the hacking name “Solo” he found many U.S. security systems used an insecure Microsoft Windows program with no password protection.

He then bought off-the-shelf software and scanned military networks, saying he found expert testimonies from senior figures reporting that technology obtained from extra-terrestrials did exist.

At the time of his indictment, Paul McNulty, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, said: “Mr. McKinnon is charged with the biggest military computer hack of all time.”

If found guilty, McKinnon could be jailed for 70 years and fined as much as $1.75 million.

Though suing file-sharing sites has no effect on the proliferation of file sharing, the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America)- and its lawers- sure feel better about themselves for doing it. However, there is a section of the film world that isn’t yet positioned to take organized legal action.

That’s right, the porn industry. Made up of a few well-established companies and who knows how many independent producers (and “producers”), porn production cannot really act collectively. However, one man is trying to change that.

Jason Tucker has formed the PAK Group, complete with a catchy mission statement (“committed to taking actino against thieves”) and logo. Unless you read the client list, you wouldn’t realize that the group focuses on protecting adult content.

The PAK Group was founded in September 2007 by a coalition of producers angry with the spread of piracy online. It originally set out to attack individual file-sharers online, much like the RIAA.

Tucker’s new target refers largely to the deluge of “tube” websites that have sprung up in the past few years: styled after the ever-so-popular YouTube, there are now hundreds of these sites offering free streaming video complete with search engines, indexed content, tagging, and in some cases even a download option. Much of their content, however, is pirated.

Epic Gillmor Gang today. Everyone went in with guns blazing over the data portability/ownership debate that has spilled out over the Facebook/Google scuffle. DataPortability founder Chris Saad was also on the call, but failed to take a leadership position in the debate (he did, however, weigh in with a blog post on the subject before the call). Their influence may be waning.

As the podcast ended the blog posts started rolling in.

Marc Canter, who I accuse of compromising his position as a thought leader in the data portability debate simply because Facebook is suddenly telling him everything he wants to hear, says that his position hasn’t changed (nevertheless, it has). Robert Scoble simply apologized for being on the wrong side of the issue, yet again. And Dan Farber, a Gillmor Gang regular who missed the call, picked up on the analogy to the founding fathers writing the Bill of Rights and wrote about it here.

All in all, the group seems to be in alignment after the talk. Data ownership is an important issue that cannot be left in the big co.’s hands. Because if it is, they’ll serve their interests first, and that will lead to more walled gardens.

Nick Cannon appears in the video for Mariah Carey’s new single Bye Bye

Singer Mariah Carey is reported to have married actor Nick Cannon weeks after meeting him on the set of a video.

But there has been no confirmation from the pair’s representatives. US media have claimed the ceremony took place in secret in the Bahamas on Wednesday.

People.com and E! News quoted his family members and a local clergyman as saying the pair did tie the knot.

Cannon, 27, is said to have met the star while making the video for her new single Bye Bye at the end of March.

The singer appeared to show off an engagement ring on 26 April

Carey and Cannon were seen together at the premiere of her film Tennessee at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York last weekend, with the singer sporting a diamond ring.

E! quoted a relative, Linda Cannon, as saying: “He called us and told us all about it. We are happy for him.”

People.com quoted Bishop Clifford Petty of the National Church of God in the Caribbean as saying he presided over the wedding.

But some stories have questioned whether it is a publicity stunt for her new single, album and films.

Cannon has starred in the movies Day of the Dead, Drumline and Bobby and, according to his website, he will portray late tennis player Arthur Ashe in a forthcoming biopic.
