The social-networking site MySpace has won a $234 million antispam judgment, according to the Associated Press.

On the losing side of the award–believed to be the largest ever under the 2003 Can-Spam Act–were defendants Walter Rines and Sanford Wallace, the so-called spam king. MySpace won the case against Wallace after he failed numerous times to turn over documents or even to show up for court.

“MySpace has zero tolerance for those who attempt to act illegally on our site,” MySpace Chief Security Officer Hemanshu Nigam told the AP. “We remain committed to punishing those who violate the law and try to harm our members.”

In March of last year, MySpace filed suit against Wallace alleging he launched a phishing scam to fraudulently access MySpace profiles. Wallace was also accused of spamming thousands of MySpace users with unwanted advertisements and luring them to his Web sites.

MySpace said Wallace and Rines sent 735,925 messages to MySpace members. Under Can-Spam, each violation entitles MySpace to $100 in damages, tripled when conducted “willfully and knowingly,” according to the report.

He has been sued by the Federal Trade Commission and companies such as AOL and Concentric Network Corp. In May 2006, Wallace and his company Smartbot.net were ordered by a federal court to turn over $4,089,500.

Mac OS X’s reputation for security was tarnished Thursday when a team of researchers from Independent Security Evaluators (ISE) managed to hack a MacBook Air in two minutes using a zero-day vulnerability in Apple’s Safari 3.1 Web browser.

The ISE security researchers — Charlie Miller, Jake Honoroff, and Mark Daniel — were participating in the “PWN to OWN” competition at the CanSecWest security conference, which began Wednesday in Vancouver, British Columbia.

“Pwn” is computer gaming slang for “own,” as in conquer. The “p” typo serves to heighten the humiliation of defeat by emphasizing that the loss came at the hands of a youth who can’t even spell or type correctly. The term has also come to be used in security circles.

Contest participants had their choice of trying to hack an Apple MacBook Air running OS X 10.5.2, a Sony Vaio VGN-TZ37CN running Ubuntu 7.10, or a Fujitsu U810 running Vista Ultimate SP1. During the first day, when attacks were limited to network attacks on the operating system, no one managed to compromise any of the systems.

That changed Thursday when attacks on default client-side applications — Web browser, e-mail, IM — were allowed. The ISE team won $10,000 from security firm TippingPoint Technologies for compromising the MacBook Air.

The undisclosed vulnerability in Safari 3.1 has been shown to Apple and no further information about it will be revealed until Apple can issue an update, TippingPoint said.

In a blog post on Friday, TippingPoint said, “[S]ince the Vista and Ubuntu laptops are still standing unscathed, we are now opening up the scope of the targets beyond just default installed applications on those laptops; any popular third-party application (as deemed ‘popular’ by the judges) can now be installed on the laptops for a prize of $5,000 upon a successful compromise.”

Apple did not respond to a request for comment.

The MySpace page of Ashley Alexandra Dupre, 22, provides a window into the life of a high-end prostitute and aspiring musician who went from a broken home in New Jersey to a lucrative “career” in the city that never sleeps.

In an August 30 posting on MySpace, Ashley Dupre (born Ashley Youmans, then Ashley Alexandra Dupre, then by her hooker alias, “Kristen”) wrote:

“The past few months have been a roller coaster with so called friends, lovers, and family … but its something you have to deal with and confront in order to move on …”

“What destroys me, strengthens me” is the deep slogan next to an Ashley Alexandra Dupre photo. There are other Ashley Dupre photos showing her at various places, including in a bikini on a boat in a tropical locale.

The number of hits to MySpace page soared to two million as the story broke linking Dupre to the prostitution ring frequented by Eliot Spitzer.

The New York Governor announced his resignation, effective Monday, after being snared in a federal investigation of Emperor’s Club VIP.

There is actually a photo gallery dedicated to Spitzer on Ashley Dupre’s MySpace page, including shots of the posh Washington hotel where their trysts occurred.

Now the Emperor’s Club’s most famous employee, the 22-year-old Dupre describes her favorite musical artists as Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Celine Dion, Christina Aguilera and Frank Sinatra, among many others.

Her Web site boasted a recording of a song, “What We Want.”

“I know what you want, you got what I want. I know what you need. Can you handle me?” Ashley Alexandra Dupre sings to all who will listen. Gulp.

“Kristen” briefly spoke to the New York Times last night about the Eliot Spitzer sex scandal, but provided few sordid details. Sorry guys.

Law enforcement officials identified the governor as a “Client No. 9″ who had a February 13 sexual encounter with “Kristen” and paid her $4,300.

The rest, as they say, is political sex scandal history. Anyway, below is a look at some of Ashley Dupre’s MySpace friends. They look like a classy bunch!
